Plan to major in music and pre-med – Do I really need to take an ap physics class as a senior?
I would like to have more time to practice my flute and piano each day so that I will be able to earn the full amount of scholarship that I plan to audition for at the college I will attend next school year. However, I do want to know if dropping my ap physics class will worsen my performance in a college physics class. I am a straight-A student and I’m also wondering if it’s really necessary to take all the ap classes in high school to get a better chance of getting accepted into college (which I’m currently doing).
So first of all, should I drop the class? Why/why not?
And secondly, will dropping the class drastically affect my chance of getting more scholarships?
I completely understand where you’re coming from — I’m a big vocal musician as well as wanting to major in pre-med. I took AP Physics last year, and, although the work was a lot, I enjoyed the class.
Before I can answer your question, I’d need more information. Are you dropping so you have less homework, or to add another music class? What would you be taking instead? If it’s another AP class, such as Music Theory, I’d say go for it! Have you taken AP Biology or Chemistry? Those would help more for pre-med. Yes, you probably won’t do as good as you normally would in your physics class in college, but the difference won’t be too noticable.
If you’re course load already has a bunch of AP classes in it, you should be fine dropping it. I’m not sure how many scholarships are offered through AP classes, especially how much 1 class would affect them. If you need the extra time to bump up your commuity service record, work experiance or build up your music portfolio, dropping it wouldn’t be a bad decision.
As long as you’re taking other AP classes other than Physics and you have an above-average workload (which I’m sure you have), don’t feel worried in dropping the class. Enjoy your senior year. Especially if you’re majoring in music and want to get scholarships for it, spend more time in that!
Good luck.
